Introduction:

Types of Hatchet:

The following table shows what level attack you need to wield a hatchet, and what level woodcutting you need to use each hatchet. If you cannot wield the hatchet, you may still use it as long as you have the required woodcutting level and have the hatchet in your inventory.

With the points gained from the Stealing Creation Mini-game you can by a Violate or Morphic tool. These can be turned into a Clay hatchet. A Violate tool will randomly turn into a new tool and give 120% extra experience before it disintegrates. On the other hand, a Morphic tool will turn into the tool of your choice, but only give 100% extra experience before it disappears.

Bird nest

Occasionally, a Bird nest will fall out of a tree. If you search a nest you might receive items such as Rings, Seeds for Farming, and Bird's eggs. The bird's eggs can be incubated and raised as pets using the Summoning skill. Empty nests can be ground up and used to make Saradomin brews.

Note: Wearing a strung rabbit foot increases your chance in receiving a bird nest.

Canoes:

Your woodcutting skills can be used to make canoes for travelling along the river Lum, which runs from Lumbridge up to level 35 wilderness. To cut a canoe out of a tree you will need a hatchet as well as a certain Woodcutting level (see table below). Note that canoes are members only. For any questions about Canoes, you can talk to the nearby stationguard.

Canoes

How to make a Canoe:

  1. Head to one of the stations and cut down the unusual big tree there.
  2. When that it is cut down, you can make a canoe from it. Click on the fallen tree and select the canoe you want to make.
  3. Push the canoe into the water by clicking on it.
  4. You can now float on it. Click on the canoe and select where you want to go. Remember, higher level canoes can float further than the others, and give more woodcutting experience. It is there advised that you build the highest level canoe you can make.

Canoe Stations:

There are 5 stations located along the river Lum where you can travel to. From South to North (you can travel both ways), they are:

  • Lumbridge, at the east side of the river, just south of the House with the Goblins in it.
  • Champions Guild, at the east side of the river, just west of the wheat field.
  • Barbarian Village, at the east side of the river, south of the bridge to the village.
  • Edgeville, at the east side of the river, south of the bridge.
  • Level 35 Wilderness, the little lake south of where the Moss Giants are, between Red Dragon Isle and the Lava Maze. Only Waka canoes can come here. WARNING: You cannot go back from this station!

Types of Canoes:

Evil Tree:

In the Evil Tree Distractions and Diversions you help the Leprechauns with getting rid of the Evil trees that they have accidentally grown. These Evil Trees need to be cut or burned down to preserve the forest. There are two ways start aiding the Leprechauns, you can search for newly growing Evil Trees yourself or wait for others to find them and join in just to take them down. If you have completed the Tree Gnome Village quest, then you may hunt for the sapling yourself, which will grow into Evil Trees. When a sapling has sprouted, it can be nurtured using the Farming skill to speed up its growth. Once a sapling has fully grown into an Evil Tree, then you can dispatch of it by using your Woodcutting and Firemaking skills. Once an Evil tree has been put to death you may clean your reward, consisting of noted logs, random items, and the temporary ability to automatically bank logs if your inventory is full. For more information, please refer to the Evil Tree Distractions and Diversions guide.

Money Making:

To make money out of your woodcutting at a lower level we recommend you chop regular or oak trees. Both these type of logs are in in high demand by players training their Fletching or Construction skill. You can either fletch the regular logs into arrow shafts or just sell the logs themselves. Oak logs are bought by players training their Construction skill to be made into planks. When you have achieved level 40 in woodcutting you could switch to willows, tough they do not sell for that much compared to regular and oak logs. If you are after money and not so much after experience you should stick with chopping regular or oak trees.

Once you reach level 60 Woodcutting becomes a interesting tool for moneymaking as you will be able to chop maple trees. Maple logs are very popular with players training their fletching. Non-members are also after these logs since they are the only cheap alternative compared to yew to train their Firemaking skill on. From level 75 on this skill becomes a great way to earn money. Cutting yew logs at this level is the best option you have to earn money as they are in high demand by fletchers going for a Fletching skillcape. You may be able to cut magic trees at level 75 which, we recommend you stick with yews. Although magic logs sell for a lot more, you should wait until you have reached level 85. Even if you passed the level 85 mark, chopping magic logs in bulk will still take you days.

Training Methods:

Level 1-25:

To start off your Woodcutting training look for locations with many regular trees or dead trees and start chopping. Draynor Village, Draynor Manor, and Seer's Village are great places to train as they have a bank nearby. What to do with the logs? You can either bank them to be sold afterwards, or use them to train your Firemaking skill. Members have the option to fletch the logs into arrow shafts. The advantage of using this last method is that you do not have to be near a bank. At level 15 you could switch to oaks but until you reach level 20, cutting oak trees will be very slow. If you in the neighborhood of Draynor or Seer's Village, you can switch between oak and regular trees if you feel the need for it.

Level 20-40:

Because of the fact that cutting willows at level 30 or teaks at level 35 is considerably slow, the best trees to be chopped from level 20 to 40 are oaks. Quite a lot of oak trees can be found east of Draynor bank, West of Catherby bank, and near Castle Wars.

Level 40-60:

When you reach level 40, chopping a full inventory of willow logs will become substantially faster. Non-members who wish to bank the their logs should head over to the willow trees just southwest of Draynor Bank. Just west of Draynor village and a it further away from the bank are another four willow trees. If you are F2P and are only after fast experience, then the place to be is the willow trees just south of Rimmington. This location is not as popular as the only option to get rid of your logs is to sell them to the local general store. Members who have completed the Rocking Out quest may also train at this location since this quest unlocks the ability to deposit logs in your locker. There are two additional locations for members where willow trees can be found near a bank. North of Seer's Village is on of them. The other spot can be found just outside of the entrance to the Barbarian Assault arena. Players may use the deposit box at the Barbarian Assault complex to bank the logs. Member who wish to make a fair amount of money out of Woodcutting can switch to teaks instead of willows. Locations with teak trees suitable for training can be found southwest of Castle Wars, on Ape Atoll, in the Kharazi Jungle, and on the island northeast of Mos Le'Harmless. Member who have started the Tai Bwo Wannai Clean Up mini-game may chop teak trees at the Teak and Mahogany plantation east of the village at the cost of 100 trading sticks per trip. Although there is no bank in the village, you can use Rionasta's parcel service to bank your logs. Rionasta will take any item to the bank for a fee of 10 trading sticks. Chopping maples at level 45 is not a good idea as it is quite slow. Therefore, members should to hold off on cutting maples until they reach level 60.

Level 60-75:

Chopping maples does not give as much experience compared to willows. If you want to earn a fair amount of money while training your Woodcutting, you should switch to maple once you have achieved level 60. Maple logs are in high demand by players training their Firemaking and Fletching skills. Maple trees can be found scattered around Seer's Village, and outside of the Legend's Guild. Those who are looking for experience only are advised to switch to choking ivy. The downside of chopping this plant, is that you do not receive any logs and therefore no money. The only option for nonmember at these levels are willows. Although if you are in need of money you may switch to cutting yews trees once you get to level 60. However, getting a full inventory of yew logs at these levels takes up a lot of time. Another option for members to earn money at this stage is to cut mahogany trees. These type of trees can be found on Ape Atoll, in the Kharazi Jungle, and on the island northeast of Mos Le'Harmless. Member who have started the Tai Bwo Wannai Clean Up mini-game may chop mahogany trees at the Teak and Mahogany plantation east of the village at the cost of 100 trading sticks per trip. Although there is no bank in the village, you can use Rionasta's parcel service to bank your logs. Rionasta will take any item to the bank for a fee of 10 trading sticks. Arctic pines give a good amount of experience and let you earn a decent amount of money. Pines can be found on the island of Neitiznot.

Level 75-85:

Once you have passed the level 75 mark, you will be able to cut yews much faster. You should only cut yews if you want to make money with Woodcutting. Very popular F2P places to train on yews are south of Edgeville bank, north of Varrock Palace, south of Falador, and near Draynor Village. On member worlds the most popular trees are found just south of Seer's Village, west of Catherby and at the Tree Gnome Stronghold. Those members who do not care about making money can switch to Eucalyptus trees, located north of Oo'glog. This type of tree gives a little less experience compared to yew trees, but requires a lower Woodcutting level and its location is generally less crowed. If you wish to bank the eucalyptus logs and have completed the As a First Resort... quest, you may use the Oo'glog bank. However if you have not completed this quest the only option you have is to burn the logs. If you want more experience for less effort you should stick with willows, maples, and arctiv pines. If you are only looking for experience then choking ivy is an option. However, you will not receive any logs form chopping it. It is not worth to spend your time on magic trees as the spots with magic trees are always overcrowded and at these levels it takes a lot of time to even get one inventory. For non-members, the best trees to cut are willows.

Level 85-99:

At this stage Woodcutting becomes one of the best skills for money making. From now on you can start cutting yews for experience and money. Although maples, willows, arctic pines, and choking ivy are still the best option if you want to get level 99 as soon as possible. You should only switch to magic trees if you are after money as they will not give much of experience compared to yews, maples, or willows. The best magic tree spots are located southwest of Lletya, southwest of Seers Village, at the Tree Gnome Stronghold and at the Mage training area. Once you complete the Spirit of Summer quest you unlock the access to the Cursed Magic Tree. This tree looks like a normal magic tree but yields you a little more experience per log. The only downside to this tree is its access and the lack of a bank nearby. It can only be accessed through a portal in the Wilderness (level 23).

Tree Respawn Times

Below, you will see a table with the respawn time of every tree in a different amount of populated worlds. As you can see, the respawn times are a lot faster in higher populated worlds, therefore it is recommended you cut trees in those worlds, do keep in mind that those are obviously busier too, however.
